How East Asian Culture Saved My Life

One of my grandfather’s articles, published a few years after returning to the United States from more than a decade of living in China [this piece appeared in the journal, Social Forces vol. 95 (1932–33).]
A 1922 photograph my grandfather took of a coal carrier (probably near Nanjing), a couple of years before my father was born [from Guy Walter Sarvis, “Some Impressions of Chinese Realities,” World Call (March 1922).]
The name the Nanjing Chinese gave to my grandparents (author’s photo, 2022).
